"Birth is not only about making babies. Birth is about making mothers - strong, competent, capable mothers who trust themselves and know their inner strength." - Barbara Katz Rothman, PhD
Child birth in South Africa has in recent decades become progressively medicalized and institutionalized, to a point where the rates of interventions sadly no longer always benefit the mothers and babies subjected to them. What should be a beautiful and sacred experience often becomes a disappointing and traumatic event, with negative effects on bonding, breastfeeding and a mother's belief in her ability to successfully raise her child. Because of this, women are increasingly taking a more active role in making decisions about their bodies and births.
Midwifery is one of the oldest professions in the world. The word 'midwife' literally means 'with women'. Midwives promote wellness in the women and babies they care for, both in their own right and in collaboration with other healthcare professionals. The midwifery model is in no way opposed to medical intervention, but believe that most women in low-risk pregnancies can safely give birth naturally and with little or no intervention, unless medically necessary.
Women deserve safe options in childbirth and to give birth in the ways that their bodies were designed to do. They have the right to make educated, informed decisions about their healthcare, including the choices they have for maternity care providers and birth locations.

"To speak of birth, to touch people's hearts and souls to awaken that part of humankind that has forgotten that it matters enormously how a baby comes into the world - that is our task." Vicki Chan and Nick Edmondstone
